PREFACE - Rogues in Paradise Dissenting Voice Yardfowl: A Voice to Challenge the Colonial Legacy. Yardfowl is a fictional personality in Rogues in Paradise, inspired by many Bajans I have experienced and observed throughout the years. He embodies the voices of those who endured and still face the tradition of colonialism in Barbados. Unlike the colonial narratives, which often skirt around the topic of slavery or technique it with a sense of regret, survivors talk with feelings rooted in the genuine and long lasting effects of physical, psychological, and psychological abuse. Yardfowl is their voice-- bold, unfiltered, and grounded in the lived experiences of his forefathers. He shows the resilience and strength of those who sustained and overcame inhumane deterioration, injury, and systemic oppression.
